The print and visual media, the radio stations and the self-proclaimed political analysts are at it once again. In 2009 Lok Sabha election, they predicted that the LDF and the UDF were evenly poised. When the ballot boxes were opened, the UDF got 16 out of 20 seats. During the recent Panchayat elections, the media declared that the LDF had a traditional grip at the grassroots level. When the results were declared, it was found that the UDF was way ahead.
After these Himalayan blunders, can we expect scientific predictions from media sources and ivory-tower analysts? Of course not! Once again they are saying it is a neck and neck race in the 2011 Assembly election. Some are even saying that the so-called ‘VS factor’ will ensure a narrow victory for the LDF.
A 5 day wait will reveal the truth. The UDF will get 100 to 110 seats, with sizeable margins in several constituencies. It will be abundantly clear that the VS factor ensured the defeat of several LDF candidates. VS thaaram alla bharaam aanuennu result theliyikkum!
Over 60% of the voters are young. They will choose the younger candidates, the more dynamic persons, the pro-development individuals. More than 50% of the voters are women. They will never vote for someone who makes crude remarks against women. G Sukumaran Nair of the NSS only said what everyone else is thinking, but hesitates to say.
During my election campaign I have felt time and again the pulse of the common man. A man named Jamaluddin telephoned me and said, “I voted for you when you were with the CPM. I voted for you when you were with the Congress. Tomorrow even if you are with the BJP, I will vote for you.” He really touched my heart. On the other hand, Comrade Janardhanan made an ugly display which can only be explained in Malayalam: Mundu pokki kaanichu! From each according to his ability…..
